The Etzel gas storage in northern Germany holds stocks under high pressure in nine subterranean caverns created by washing out salt deposits more than 1,000 metres below ground.
Since the cavern walls are impermeable to hydrocarbons, these structures are very suitable for gas storage.
The Etzel facility is tied to the Emden facilities and the Netra trunkline.
