Workplace health promotion

In addition to risk analyses and good risk management, we are committed to promoting workplace health.

In addition to risk analyses and good risk management, we are committed to promoting workplace health.

Workplace health promotion (WHP) covers a broad range. It is not confined to protection against undesirable conditions, but also focuses actively on the positive and health promoting factors in the working environment.

WHP directs attention at ways of creating a working environment and a culture of interaction which promote good health and development for everyone employed in an organisation.

Important elements include improving the working environment and organisation of work, promoting active employee involvement in decision-making, and strengthening personal and professional development.

Local care provides an example of our health promotion efforts. By providing an employee with greater support from colleagues and better backing by superiors, this approach aims to facilitate a culture of caring in which being in work is seen to promote health.

Work on local care is split into three levels:

  • local care - general prevention and strengthening of the potential for promoting health and well-being among employees
  • support - individual customisation of work, with backing from the person's immediate superior to promote local care and prevent sickness absence
  • network - follow-up during sick leave.

The WHP concept is also applies to the use of the workplace as an arena for influencing employees to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

A number of lifestyle campaigns related to physical activity, training to promote health, diet and ceasing to smoke have been pursued in several of our business areas.

Definition: The total number of days of sickness absence as a percentage of possible working days (StatoilHydro employees).
