The use of biofuels is one of few possible carbon dioxide-reducing alternatives in the transport sector.
That is why several countries, the EU countries and the USA in particular, have adopted ambitious goals and action plans for the increased use of biofuel.
In its latest analysis, World Energy Outlook 2006, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that the use of biofuel in the EU will increase from 2 million tonnes in 2004 to between 27 and 36 million tonnes in 2030].
The use of biofuels can result in reduced emissions of greenhouse gases because their production is based on renewable raw materials. At the same time, StatoilHydro is also giving consideration to issues relating to the production of biofuels. We are working actively to address the challenges relating to environmental impact, biodiversity and social impacts to enable us to make the right choices.
The transport sector will require new solutions if it is to succeed in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. New technology, more sustainable supply of resources and a correspondingly greater proportion of biofuel will contribute to reducing the negative consequences in relation to the conventional fuels used today.
Our goal is to be an active supplier of biofuel, both in terms of production and trading and as a leading player in the markets in which we sell fuel.
