Environmental technology

We are addressing technology improving the entire CO2 value chain.

"Licence to operate" is a prerequisite for doing business. To us this means complying with our goal of "zero harm" and to responding to the increased awareness of climate change by being a part of the solution.

The following areas are examples of where technology can make a difference:

  • CO2 Value Chain
  • HSE Management
  • New Energy

Developing technology for capturing, transporting and storing CO2 in a safe and energy efficient way without introducing negative effects on the environment is crucial.

We are addressing technology improving the entire CO2 value chain. The experiences gained through our CCS projects at Sleipner, In Salah and Snøhvit is utilized to develop new competence on safe transport and storage of CO2 i.e fundamental properties of CO2 under realistic condition and CO2 storage in different subsurface structures including monitoring techniques.

We have developed several tools for environmental risk assessments which have been used in designing and operation our installations and industrial plants, e.g. Environmental Factor Produeced Water.

As these tools are close to completion the R&D effort is focusing on developing technology for monitoring of environmental effects, e.g. CORAMM projects addressing the behaviour and monitoring of corals exposed to environmental stresses.

We recognizes the need to develop new sources of energy. Our main focus is to develop offshore wind turbines. The R&D effort is closely linked to our demonstration project HYWIND.

Supplying the transport sector with alternative to fossil fuels is vital to reduce the CO2 emissions. The R&D effort is dedicated to developing technology for producing 2. generation biofuels and leveraging our experience on hydrogen. In 2007 a hydrogen fuelling station was set up in Porsgrunn at the R&D centre.
