Spin-offs

The oil and gas industry has great potential for stimulating economic growth.

StatoilHydro aims to make sustainable investments that create and maximize shared value – investments that benefit our shareholders and the host countries where we operate.

We do this by creating local content and generating positive spin-offs from our core business in support of the development ambitions of host countries.

We proactively recruit locally, demonstrating that we are a good employer offering a safe working environment, attractive training opportunities and building on local competence.

We promote local sourcing and work with local businesses as suppliers and contractors where they exist, and invest in developing sustainable and competitive local enterprises.

We support education and skills building in the local community and amongst our suppliers and contractors to build lasting capacity and to help them develop the skills standards and certifications required for them to work in the oil and gas industry.

Local content

StatoilHydro is working in Northwest Russia – drawing on our experience from Snøhvit on the Norwegian side of the Barents Sea – to prepare Russian suppliers for the future oil and gas development.

We have expanded their knowledge base, qualified companies for making deliveries to projects abroad, and supported suppliers in finding Norwegian partners. Supplier development centres have also been established in Arkhangelsk and Murmansk with StatoilHydro support, as have Supplier Network Associations.

We are also contributing towards the development of vocational training and higher education in both Arkhangelsk and Murmansk to promote the development of expertise in oil- and gas-related technology.

In Angola, StatoilHydro is working with the Angolan national oil company, Sonangol, to develop local oil and gas skills and expertise through the Management and Technology Transfer Program. StatoilHydro is also working with the University of Agostinho Neto in Luanda to strengthen national higher education dedicated to petroleum geosciences and engineering.

In Iran, StatoilHydro is working in close cooperation with local communities in order to keep them informed about ongoing exploration activities and to maximize local content. A comprehensive Stakeholder Engagement Plan is developed for a possible development of the Azar Field.

In Azerbaijan, StatoilHydro is working together with the national oil company, Socar, and other international companies to build a robust basis for our investments in the country. Through the Regional Development Initiative (RDI)  we are working to address basic development challenges such as enterprise development, effective governance, and access to energy.
