Kyoto mechanisms for CO2 reduction

StatoilHydro actively supports the Kyoto treaty and its mechanisms. We are working on a series of development projects in which we are applying the CDM and JI mechanisms.
The Kyoto Protocol came into effect on 16 February 2005. The first commitment period runs from 2008 to 2012.

The Kyoto Protocol defines the mechanisms which give countries with Kyoto commitments the opportunity to implement emission-reducing measures in other countries. The aim is to reduce the total costs arising from meeting the Kyoto Protocol reduction targets.

CDM (Clean Development Mechanism), also known as the Green Development Mechanism (refer to section 12 in the Kyoto Protocol), makes it possible to gain credits for investments in projects in countries without Kyoto commitments.

JI (Joint Implementation), also known as the Common Implementation (refer to section 6 in the Kyoto Protocol), makes it possible to gain credits for investments in emission-reducing projects in countries which have such commitments.

StatoilHydro is in the process of identifying and developing CDM and JI projects in a number of countries in which we have operations. Currently these types of projects are ongoing in Mexico, Russia, the Middle East and North Africa.
This is in addition to our trade in emission quotas on the international quota market.
