The crude oil terminal is owned by StatoilHydro and Petoro through the
Mongstad Terminal DA joint venture, and operated by StatoilHydro.
Located near Bergen in western Norway, it plays an important role in Norwegian crude oil exports by providing intermediate storage.
Volumes transported from the Norwegian continental shelf are held there for onward shipment to customers in North America, Europe and Asia.
Crude oil is delivered to the terminal in shuttle tankers from such fields as Kvitebjørn and Fram in the North Sea and Heidrun in the Norwegian Sea, and through Troll Oil Pipeline I and II from the Troll B and C platforms respectively.
This facility gives StatoilHydro great flexibility in the timing and volume of crude shipments, which is important for marketing Norwegian oil beyond north-western Europe.
Facts:
• Six rock cavern stores with a total capacity of 9.4 million barrels
• Two jetties able to handle crude oil carriers up to 380,000 deadweight tonnes
• One ship-to-ship jetty able to handle crude oil carriers up to 440,000 deadweight tonnes.
Serves as the terminal for
• Troll Blend oil through Troll Oil Pipeline I and II
• Heidrun oil, delivered by shuttle tanker
• crude oil for transhipment from such StatoilHydro-operated fields as Gullfaks, Norne and Åsgard.
The Port of Mongstad is Norway's largest in tonnage terms. About 60% of products from the associated refinery are exported, and 98% go by sea. Road tanker transport accounts for only 2%.
