Electricity generation

The combined heat and power (CHP) station at Mongstad will have the capacity to generate about 280 megawatts of electricity plus roughly 350 megawatts of heat.

This output will come from two gas turbines, each linked to an electricity generator and a recovery facility for exhaust fume heat. In addition comes a steam turbine with its own generator.

Electricity output is due to be delivered directly to the industrial plants at Mongstad and, via the regional power grid, to the Troll gas processing facilities at Kollsnes further south.

The initial energy efficiency of the CHP station will be about 70%. As future installations are Mongstad are gradually connected, this will rise to more than 80%.

That is because the refinery has a substantial requirement for process heat, particularly for high-pressure steam, which can be met by exploiting energy in the gas turbine exhaust.
