As the operator of Europe’s first and the world’s northernmost export facility for liquefied natural gas (LNG), StatoilHydro is reinforcing its position as a major gas exporter.
The Snøhvit fi eld in the Barents Sea has no installations which are visible above the surface.
The Arctic gas is sent ashore through a 143-kilometre-long pipeline to Melkøya
near Hammerfest. There, the gas is processed before being cooled down to
liquid form and shipped on special ships to customers around the world.
Snøhvit has made StatoilHydro a player in a globalised gas market in which
the LNG trade brings different regions together. LNG means more options for
both buyer and seller, which increases the flexibility for both parties.
