The last joint

The Langeled pipeline was completed in April 2007 - on time and 3 billion kroner ahead of budget.

The last joint on the southerly pipe was welded together in May 2006. Twelve divers were involved in the work. A Pipeline Repair System, designed and owned by Hydro, Statoil and ExxonMobil, and called a “habitat”, was lowered onto the seabed so that it covered the two pipe ends.

Then it was emptied of water, to enable the divers to change into ordinary working clothes and carry out the work almost as if they were on land, even though they were at depths of between 72 and 84 meters.

On the bottom off the Sleipner platform the team positioned a valve station. Large valves of 42 inches can sluice the gas up to Sleipner through the powerful risers, thus avoiding a substantial investment in building a brand new platform.

In August 2006 the job was complete. The weld was finished, and the pipeline was completed. On schedule and an impressive three billion kroner under budget.

For the northern pipe, three subsea welds remained. These were completed in April 2007, so that Langeled became a continuous pipe system from Nyhamna to Easington.
