Success and new challenges

Ormen Lange was found in an area with great sea depths, tough climatic conditions and a fractured sea floor. These challenges had to be tackled to get the gas up.

New technology had to be evolved to realise the development of the Ormen Lange field. This included a newly-developed subsea excavator.

The site of the Ormen Lange field presented unprecedented challenges to Hydro. The first was its enormous sea depth.

The field's seabed lies at depths between 850 and 1,100 metres under the tumultous waves of the Norwegian Sea. The Norwegian oil industry had no experience producing gas in such deep waters.

As a matter of fact, no place in the world produced gas at such large sea depths. And in addition to depth was difficult subsea terrain where ice-cold currents flow through high peaks and low valleys.

The field is also far from land - and even farther from the gas markets of Europe.

But that's another issue.

Hydro had no shortage of people committed to solve these formidable challenges - one at a time.

The project developed its own dynamic. The attitude was "get the gas up." And we did!
