Upgrading the infrastructure

The development of Ormen Lange led to the improvement of Aukra municipality’s transportation infrastructure.

In the summer of 2004, Mayor Aud Mork opened a new pedestrian and cycle path adjacent to the main road, which for a few long months was the thoroughfare for long convoys of heavy goods vehicles.

Tonnes of equipment and tools, modules and materials were transported on the road from the ferry site to Nyhamna. The traffic situation became busier, more hectic, quite simply bigger. Not to mention more dangerous.

Therefore the municipality, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and Hydro joined forces to build a new pedestrian and cycle path to secure access for non-motorists. Moreover, Hydro collaborated with the municipality to improve the crossroads near the church, not far from the ferry terminal.

“Each day, the heavy traffic produced a feeling that something was happening here,” explains Asbjørg Jensen. “Now we are perhaps a little afraid that things can become too quiet.”

However, the new ferry costing NOK 48 million, built at Aker Aukra, as well as two new ferry terminals, will remain when the last construction vehicles are heading elsewhere. A new network for the water supply is also on the way. More footpaths have also been built, making it easier to visit some of the island’s beauty spots and enjoy the stunning scenery.

The municipality also acquired a gas infrastructure, with gas for heating, cooking and light for the consumers, as well as an energy supply for the new business park. Around NOK 10 million was invested in gas outlets for local use.

“All we have to do is turn on the tap outside the fence,” explains Aud Mork. The municipality has laid 8 kilometers of gas pipes. All trenches now being dug come complete with a gas pipe.
