To avoid friction between the workforce and the local population – and to ensure that the stay on Gossen was as enjoyable as possible – Hydro took great care in building a site hotel that was a pleasant place to live and spend time. Firstly, it was large, with the capacity to house 3,000 people at one time, making it the world’s 16th largest hotel.

Next, an extensive welfare programme was established. An outdoor football pitch was built with floodlights for the summer months. When the harsh cold winter set in on the island, the football matches continued in the sports building, because a surprising number of the workers had surplus energy enough following a 10 and 12-hour day to attempt to score some goals before bedtime.

In addition to an exercise room, the welfare building had a library, internet café, pool table and a pub. As well as a cleaning room for fish.

When teams of workers are invited to the coast, many of them prefer to spend their spare time catching cod, haddock and coley. And freezing the fillets for the day they can return home.

Norway’s only on-site vicar provided spiritual support, whilst the nurse took care of their health.

70 bicycles were purchased, so that people could get to know the island, which they did in a positive way because there was never any real friction. In the words of Mayor Aud Mork: “for us locals, meeting the visitors was an extremely positive experience.

It was clear that the welfare programme on the rig gave people enjoyable spare time. And when our guests chose to explore the island – to barbecue on one of the beaches, go for a bike ride, or whatever – it was simply a joy to have them as visitors.”
