Energy management will be introduced on all the installations we operate on the NCS during 2008. Since this is a complex activity, full implementation will take some years to achieve.
The decision to adopt this approach reflects the importance of knowing how we use energy. It will eventually become a natural part of our environmental management system - in other words, with targets and follow-up. As our experience of the management opportunities increases, we will set specific targets for improved energy efficiency.
Energy management is a broad term. It can include simple activities, such as more frequent cleaning of turbine blades to enhance energy efficiency. Another example could be straightening out piping so that flue gases from a turbine flow more freely. It might also involve establishing a strategy for which turbines should be generating power in order to avoid excess output.
On a larger scale, energy can be managed by establishing a philosophy for how an oil or gas field should be developed and drained. Work can be then done in accordance with a plan which also takes account of energy consumption.
A further aspect of management in this area is to set standards for our contractors on energy efficiency in the goods and services they provide.
Some energy-saving measures have long been adopted on our installations, but we will begin a systematic approach and establish overall policies during 2008.
No Norwegian norm has so far been established for energy management, but we will apply the Danish standard. We have also contributed to the development of guidelines in this area by the Norwegian Oil Industry Association (OLF).
