StatoilHydro's heavy oil projects:
Sincor in Venezuela: StatoilHydro is taking part in the Sincor project, which includes the recovery of heavy oil in Zuata in the Orinoco belt. The oil is piped to the José industrial area in Venezuela. There, it is upgraded to approximately 180,000 barrels of light oil per day. Production started in 2000.
StatoilHydro Canada Ltd.: North American Oil Sands Corporation (NAOSC) was formed in 2001. NAOSC was the operator for oil sand leases in an area covering 1,110 square kilometres in the Athabasca region in Alberta in Canada. In April 2007, Statoil made a bid for all the shares in NAOSC. The acquisition was approved by the Canadian authorities on 26 June.
Operator in the UK: In 2007, StatoilHydro entered into an agreement with Chevron to take over three heavy oil licences on the British continental shelf. The agreement means that StatoilHydro has operator responsibility for the heavy oil fields Bressay, Mariner and Mariner East.
An agreement has also been signed with the Canadian companies Silverstone and Wilderness for a discovery in block 9/16.
StatoilHydro will thereby be responsible for around half of the proven, but not yet developed, heavy oil deposits on the British continental shelf. The development is scheduled for approval in 2010.
Environmentally conscious use of water
We will not use water from the Athabasca River, but instead use saline water from a deep geological formation. This saline water is not used for other purposes.
We will only use the best available technology to recycle the water. The company also wishes to reduce its use of water.
The practice today is 90% recycling. Our goal is to achieve 100%
