The carbon dioxide that will be captured for a limited period of time at TCM will be released back into the atmosphere due to the prohibitive cost of handling a small amount of gas for a few years.

The larger volumes to be captured from the CHP plant and refinery at Mongstad will, however, be sent in a dedicated new pipeline to an underground storage site situated below the North Sea.

The task of transport and storage has been given to the state body Gassnova, a fully state-owned company. It is currently evaluating two different storage sites. They are at or in the vicinity of the Sleipner field (which already has a carbon dioxide injection facility in operation) or in an entirely new geological formation called the Johansen formation beneath the Troll natural gas field.

StatoilHydro is involved in an advisory capacity along the whole transport and storage chain.
