Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline was officially opened on 13 July 2006.

StatoilHydro has a share of 8.71% in the 1,768 kilometre-long long pipeline, which runs from Azerbaijan’s capital Baku, via Tbilisi in Georgia, to Ceyhan by the Mediterranean Sea.

With the BTC in operations, a transport route for oil that avoids the vulnerable Turkish straits in Turkey has been opened.

Thus, Caspian oil will reach world markets quicker and the risk of oil spills is significantly reduced. BP is operator for the pipeline.

The oil comes from the BP-operated Azeri-Chiraq-Gunashli (ACG) field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.
